Search Spam Is Getting More Dangerous Every Day

Search spam, using techniques that manipulate the search results, is becoming more dangerous each and every day. Some search spammers go as far as hacking sites to inject link spam into unsuspecting web pages. And some go even further by polluting the search results with nasty malware.

Yesterday we covered a story about a serious malware issue in the search engines, where hundreds of pages were being returned by Google, Yahoo, Live, and other search engines that contained harmful malware. Today, a WebmasterWorld thread pointed me to Spammers hack Al Gore’s climate site from Vnunet. In the Al Gore example, hackers used a Wordpress loophole to inject links into the source code of the site, which were invisible to normal users but very visible to search engines.

Recap: Experience at SMX Buenos Aires 2007

The following blog post comes courtesy of Maria Balayan, who graciously volunteered to cover the SMX Buenos Aires conference in late October.

I’ve been living in the US since 1999, but I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Every time I go to Buenos Aires I lose my routine of being online almost 13 hours a day. I miss the internet connection but I am able to enjoy other things like family, food, friends, and good weather (I live in Buffalo, NY, so imagine how long and cold winter is for me).

On my last visit to Buenos Aires I had the opportunity to attend the Search Marketing Expo, the first one done in Latin America. I was lucky because I planned the trip without knowing that SMX was going to be held there on October. As soon as I found out, I asked Rand if he thought I should attend. Since I was going to be in the city, Rand thought it was a great opportunity that I couldn’t miss. I am writing this article for SEOmoz and giving you my personal opinion and experience about the event. Thanks Rand!

Rumors of Impending Facebook Music

Facebook already has taken on LinkedIn, as the past-college crowd has started using it for professional networking, and starting next week, Facebook may take on MySpace’s hold on the music scene. Rumors abound that Facebook Music will be announced at ad:tech in NY next week. Word is that Facebook is in discussions with major music labels about a new layer in the social networking service that would enable each band to have a profile on Facebook (at a location such as www.facebook.com/bandname). The profiles would showcase videos, music, pictures, and ways for fans to interact with each other.

(MySpace may be countering by joining Google’s OpenSocial alliance, if rumors reported by Silicon Valley Insider prove to be true.)

Of course, we’ve heard this rumor before, but it makes sense that Facebook would evolve in this direction, both because it’s worked so well for MySpace and because Facebook music applications (such as iLike) have been so successful. This would be the first time that Facebook would allow non-individual profiles. A variety of groups and companies would likely welcome this move as the first step in allowing new profile types.
